MELBOURNE | Looking for world-class jazz in Melbourne? With Bird’s Basement you might just get it. The City Lane was invited to attend the preview night and see what all the jazz was about.

Hiding at the bottom of an unassuming set of stairs, stepping into Bird’s Basement feels as though you’re stepping out of Melbourne and into somewhere completely new. The space, custom-built to put the focus squarely on the performance, is elegant, simple, and strangely welcoming. It’s also, obviously, perfect for performance jazz.

As a venue, Bird’s Basement takes a more appreciative approach to music, with much of its focus putting the performance before anything else. The majority of the space is reserved for seating at tables through the area, but the strictness of this seating may depend on the performance.

This seated performance area also offers seated dining and drinking with staff, it seems, trained to deliver food only at times when the band won’t be disrupted. Bird’s offers two performances per night, a dinner and a supper, with a largely Italian menu on offer, which from our experience was well suited to the music on stage.

While many in Melbourne may not be quite used to this type of jazz venue, it is difficult not to be a little seduced by the charm of this place. If you’re a dedicated jazz fan, especially one who has seen jazz abroad, Bird’s is the venue that Melbourne has always needed. If you are more a casual jazz fan, the style, atmosphere, and experience of Bird’s could very well work to turn your interest into something more dedicated.

Like jazz, Bird’s Basement is cool, interesting, and knows exactly what it is doing. Check out the website for tickets.
