MELBOURNE | Morgan Hipworth founded Bistro Morgan when he was just 15, and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Now aged 17, Morgan has seen his brand grow from a pop-up, to a first bricks and mortar store in Windsor, and now a second store in Chadstone shopping centre.

We’ve been big fans of Morgan’s doughnuts ever since the early days, his creations and vision revolving around childhood memories, and the joy the sugary buns bring to families. Morgan’s inspirations are evident in Bistro Morgan’s selection of gourmet doughnuts, with many of the flavour combinations having a childhood nostalgia feel. Along with the classics, there are several flavours that rotate each week to keep the menu upbeat and new.

Gaytime Crunch is a decedent gooey caramel filled doughnut with Australia’s classic ice cream crumb Golden Gaytime sprinkled on top of a crisp chocolate icing. Peanut Butter Jelly Doughnut meanwhile, has a bun consistency that’s almost like bread and tastes like a toasted sandwich. Oozy strawberry jam in the center and sweet peanut butter on top is a winning combination, and it, along with many of the options here, is vegan. Another favourite is the Crème Brulee, with a rich smooth custard filling so decadent you an see the vanilla pods which juxtaposes perfectly against the crisp caramel top.

For citrus lovers, the Coconut Lemon Cheesecake is a must try. The smooth lemon curd filling has a tang to it that cuts against the sweetness of the surgery doughnut. The toasted coconut shreds on top add a satisfying crunch, which makes for an elegant flavour combination. Another great options is Morgan’s personal favorite, the Cookie Monster. Filled with a thick Funfetti cake batter filling that tastes like vanilla, then coated in white chocolate and topped with Oreos and Funfetti, it’s a great choice.

For those looking for something more classic, there’s the Mr. Simpson, a plain doughnut simply coated in strawberry icing and sprinkles, topped off with a strawberry jam filled syringe that adds to the fun. Another great classic option is the Vanilla Custard – the signature light and fluffy brioche doughnut filled with rich creamy vanilla custard. Proof of just how good simple flavour combinations can be.

If you’re looking for something beyond doughnuts, Bistro Morgan also offers doughnut ice cream sandwiches and milkshakes. It’s inspiring to see someone so young create something so huge and it’s only just the beginning. We’re sure that Morgan will be opening more stores in no time, but for now if you find yourself near Chadstone and the doughnut craving kicks in, Bistro Morgan is the place to go.
