LONDON | Blacklock Soho offers diners a simple proposition. Tasty charcoal-grilled chops, a few quality sides and fine booze. That’s pretty much it, along with some sides. It’s owned by 3 former Hawksmoor alumni, which means the quality of the meat is something that you’d expect to be high. We’d heard mixed reviews about the food here but when we visited the meat was all very tasty. We went for the “all in” option, which gives diners four mixed chops (your choice from the “skinny chops” part of the menu), grilled flatbread, pre-meal nibbles and a side dish, for £20 and is excellent value.

The chops are served over grilled flatbread, which is one of the highlights of the meal – all of the juices and oil soaks into the flatbread for a deliciously indulgent, salty piece of goodness. The meat itself is cooked properly – tender on the inside, charred nicely on the outside, and properly seasoned. The soft sweet potatoes, which are cooked for 12 hours in charcoal ash are a must order side – they’re full of smoky flavour which balances perfectly with the sweetness of the potato. Bone marrow is another excellent choice.

The drinks menu is more extensive that one would expect given the small menu, and features wine, beer, spirits and cocktails. For us it’s difficult to go past the “cocktails for a fiver” list. An Aperol Negroni or Old Fashioned always hits the spot, and at £5.00 is a steal.

The venue itself is located in a Soho basement that used to house an illegal strip club but there’s not really much that gives this away – it feels more like a secret underground club, a speakeasy if you will. If it’s meat you crave and you’re in Soho, a visit to Blacklock is definitely something you should consider. It gets busy, but service is fast and efficient – a good place for a quick in-and-out meal before continuing your night.
