TOKYO | Tokyo is known for its small, hidden bars, and one of my favourite is BLOW UP. The tiny, 20 seat Shibuya venue was opened by DJ and record-buyer, Chintam, in 2018. BLOW UP operates as both a bar and record store, specialising in rare groove, soul, funk, and disco.
Pop in on any given night, and you’ll find Chintam behind the bar slinging drinks while guest DJs play an eclectic selection of vinyl. Racks of vinyl line the walls, all available to purchase. You’ll find lots of interesting releases, with a focus on Japanese artists. If you’re not sure what you want, Chintam can guide you with his encyclopaedic knowledge and passion.
If you see a limited release Wamono A-Z release, I highly recommend grabbing it. It’s a rare groove series that Chintam puts together, featuring deep cuts and forgotten gems from Japan’s past. The most recent release (sorry I nabbed the last one), features tracks unearthed from the archives of Trio Records. The record label was started by Trio Electronics (now Kenwood) and released some bangers from 1969-84.
Beyond the amazing music, you’re well catered to for drinks at BLOW UP no matter your tipple of choice. There’s a small but mighty selection of sake, cocktails, whisky highballs, Japanese beer, and wine. There’s also snacks like nuts and curry rice.
BLOW UP is the kind of bar you’ll pop into for one, and end up spending the entire night in. Highly recommended
