MELBOURNE | Burger Kitchen is a conveniently located burger joint, located just across from Moonee Ponds train station, with a focus on customisation when it comes to their burgers. We were recently invited to check out their offering, and while we’re usually uninspired to check out yet another burger spot in Melbourne’s over-saturated market, the menu at Burger Kitchen looked intriguing enough for us to go and take a look.

The fit out is nothing to shout about – a simple space with tables and seats in a nice sunny spot out the front, and some plush booths and chairs in a section to the side. A small, open kitchen lets customers see all of the burger flipping action while ordering their food. The menu is split into “Classic Kitchen” and “Gourmet Kitchen” sections. As you can guess, the classic part of the menu contains things like beef, chicken, and vege burgers with things like cheese, bacon and the usual suspects. The gourmet section, meanwhile, includes some more interesting ingredients. It would also be remiss not to mention the “build a burger” part of the menu – diners are given a basic beef or chicken base, and can then make whatever burger they want – all of the ingredients are individually listed and priced so you know exactly what you’re paying.

We opted for the “Double Barrel” which features 2 beef patties, double bacon, American and tasty cheese, lettuce, onion rings, bush chutney, aioli, and BBQ sauce. Given the height and sloppiness of the burger (we mean that in a good way, lots of sauce and cheese), the thing maintained its structural integrity surprisingly well, owing to the springy seeded milk bun. The flavours all combined nicely, at it was good value at $15.90 (the most expensive burger on the menu actually) given the amount of ingredients.

Also from the classic menu we went for the “Top Chick”, which contains marinated chicken breast, bacon, American cheese, lettuce, onion, bush chutney and aioli sauce. To top things off we opted for some haloumi which worked nicely with all of the other ingredients. We love fried chicken, but it was nice to see a burger with marinated, grilled chicken instead – it helped to balance out some of the heaviness of the American cheese and bacon.

Moving on to the gourmet side of the menu and we tried the “Black Maple”, served on black brioche with crumbed chicken breast, maple bacon, fried egg,  cheese, grilled onion, grilled mushrooms, lettuce, and maple mayonnaise. We opted for some jalapenos to, to spice things up. Another tasty burger that hit all the right notes.

For sides, we went for a serve of waffle fries and some loaded “Hot N Spicy” fries, which come topped with melted cheese, hot chilli sauce, bacon, jalapeno, and spring onion. The waffle fries were really tasty, lots of surface area with lots of crunch, however the loaded fries didn’t really hit the mark – the flavours were jumbled and we gave up after a few bites. For those looking to ingest additional calories, a good selection of shakes are offered too.

Overall, one miss and a lot of hits made our experience at Burger Kitchen a good one. What we like most is the flexibility of the burger options, meaning you can get the exact burger that you want every time. Given the amount of quality burger joints in Melbourne, it’s hard to recommend a special trip to Burger Kitchen, but if you’re in or near Moonee Ponds and craving a burger, Burger Kitchen is definitely worth putting on your list.
