MELBOURNE | Celebrating 25 years in the restaurant industry, Cafe Latte successfully embodies traditionalism merging with progressive modernism. Since its inception in 1991 as a casual café serving coffee, breakfast and lunch, it has continued to keep up with the constantly changing trends of the Melbourne hospitality scene, eventually becoming the finer dining restaurant it is known as today. At an intimate blogger’s luncheon, The City Lane had an opportunity to experience the relaxing ambience and exceptional food and wine that make this a timeless institution, remaining ever popular over the years.
Stepping through the front door, a sense of nostalgia and old-world feel is immediately felt. A section of exposed brick wall, along with the wooden floorboards, complements the rustic atmosphere; whilst neat table settings, white tablecloths and photo memorabilia along the walls exude a sense of pride and elegance. Both floors of this venue each have their own dedicated bar, with the upstairs function room more ideal for private gatherings or parties.
Speaking with owner, Luca Lorusso, his inspiration behind Café Latte is attributed to his family, his creative flare and his love for his hometown of Puglia, Italy. A true creative, the unfaltering popularity of his venue is a testament to his desire in constantly seeking improvement in what he does. Absorbing the energy exuded from his young staff, it is this merging of both the younger and older generations that Luca sees as the way forward in not only the hospitality industry, but in life.
As demonstrated through their menu, they love to fuse traditional Italian cuisine with local Australian produce and contemporary presentation styles. With minimal ingredients prepared using skillful techniques to extract a complexity of flavours, we highly commend the Head Chef and his team. Focusing on local and organic produce where possible, items such as zucchini flower stuffed with lobster, ricotta and asparagus puree are revered, whilst a simple yet elegant nettle pasta is tossed with swimmer crab, chilli, garlic and olive oil to produce an amalgamation of flavours that evenly coat the palate, making your taste buds crave more.
Everything on the plate has its purpose, and is executed with such finesse that you almost don’t want to dig your fork in and mess up the plating. Pairing the food with their extensive range of wines sets you up for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of eating, drinking, conversing and loving life. All things that Luca strives to achieve for himself, his staff and his customers through Café Latte
