CANBERRA | Capital Brewing Co. only started brewing in early 2016, and in that time have developed enough of a following and reputation for quality beers, that they’ve moved from gypsy brewing up in Sydney to setting up their own bricks and mortar brewery in Canberra.

The brewery is located in Molonglo Group’s Dairy Road District, and houses three 5,000-litre uni tanks along with a 5,000-litre bright tank which holds beer before its kegged or canned. Expansion is planned for too, with enough room for a further two 10,000-litre uni tanks and a canning line.

For visitors, there’s a lot to like when visiting. The indoor taproom next to the brewing equipment can fit 200 people, and there’s enough room for a further 100 people in the rear courtyard beer hall, and a 300 person beer garden out the front. It’s family friendly too, with a children’s play area, cubby house, games, and high chairs. Pets are welcome too, and there’s even non-alcoholic “dog beer”.

As far as actual beer goes, the brewery will have on tap Capital’s core range, along with a variety of seasonal beers, collaborations, tap room only releases and guest tap appearances from other breweries. We particularly like the ‘Evil Eye’, a 5.8% Red IPA featuring a variety of hops – Columbus, Topaz, Pacifica, Southern Cross, Motueka, US Cascade, and fresh Cascade hops grown at Batlow. All the usual styles are covered, and if you’re not sure where to start the staff will happily talk you through what’s on offer. Our recommendation is to go for a tasting paddle first so you can try a few different beers.

Those looking for food will be happy to hear that the original red Brodburger caravan is now permenantly parked at Capital Brewing, offering burgers and hot-dogs.

Brewery tours run every Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm and 4 pm, but note that places are limited, bookings essential and can only be made online in the bookings portal. You get a beer on arrival, the full behind-the-scenes brewery tour, and a tasting paddle at the end.
