MELBOURNE | Colonial Brewing Company originated in Margaret River in 2004, and set the template for what a regional brewery could be. Great craft beers in a large, relaxing, welcoming space for locals and visitors alike. The views across over 60 acres of pristine farmland didn’t hurt either.

Knowing that they needed to expand if they were going to get their beers out to a wider audience, Colonial’s owners, Colonial Leisure Group (who also own Bimbo, Lucky Coq, The Robert Burns Hotel, and The Botanical) decided to expand East, and purchased the old Matilda Bay Brewery in Port Melbourne in 2015. The space is large, with a 400 person capacity, and includes lots of seats and tables, couches, and a table tennis table right inside the brewery itself, with all the equipment there for guests to see. Given that the building is essentially one huge warehouse, there’s a surprising warmth to it, and during the day there’s a lot of natural sunlight which helps. There’s 1970s rock music and movie posters, and a big screen for movies and live sports.

Since expanding east, Colonial’s beers have become a lot more common on the Eastern seaboard, and the range has expanded too. The core range Small Ale, a surprisingly punchy 3.5% Pale Ale is one of our favourites, as is the Pale Ale, a 4.4% American Pale Ale with notes of pine and citrus. There are always a number of seasonal and limited “Project” brews on tap at any given time, and one of our favourites is the Inquest, an 11.7% Imperial Stout that hides its strength surprisingly well behind a smooth, roasted, chocolate character. The staff know their stuff well, and are happy to talk through any of the beers if you need some guidance.

For food, there’s a kitchen serving up bar favourites like pizzas, burgers, hot wings, and an assortment of sides.
