MELBOURNE | Common Room Co is a cafe in Caulfield North that is popular with locals for its welcoming, community gathering space feel and a no-fuss attitude towards its offering of quality food and drinks. It’s owned by trio Antony Wallace, Anthony Abazis (ex-Margellina Pizza Bistro), and chef Nicholas Pettigrove and housed in the base of a new apartment block.
The space is modern and welcoming. Polished concrete floors and an exposed ceiling are balanced with timber, tiles, and greenery. When I visited recently I was greeted with a vibrant space full of locals. It seemed that every other person who came in knew someone from “around the corner” or “down the road” and had a bit of a chat with the staff and another customer before meeting up with their friends.
The menu is a simple affair. 15 or so dishes with a handful of extras and sides. It’s familiar favourites, both old and on trend, done right with creative flourishes. Eggs Benedict is served with smoked pork belly steak, potato and confit onion rosti, hollandaise, and apple and pork crackling, while the chicken burger is a BBQ spiced piece of fried chicken, red cabbage slaw, pickles, and Sriracha mayonnaise in a soft brioche bun.
When I visited I was in the mood for something light, and opted for the confit salmon poke bowl filled with silky smooth salmon, edamame, crispy enoki, baby corn, red elk togarashi, grilled avocade, black rice, and roasted sesame dressing. The Japanese touches made for a delicious, light breakfast. My friend, meanwhile, enjoyed their choice of cured kingfish with three types of beetroot (raw, cooked and powdered), avocado, horseradish and greens, atop two pieces of sourdough toast.
For drinks it’s coffee, with a focus on espresso brews made using locally roasted Ottimo Coffee beans, along with juices and an assortment of local wines.
And if you’ve got a dog, you’ll be happy to know that Common Room Co is dog friendly. So much so, in fact, that there’s even a special doggie snack menu by K9 Katering.
