MELBOURNE | DC Dumpling Specialist is a Chinese restaurant in Box Hill that most people visit for the dumplings, but actually offers a lot more than that.
The place is small and bare bones. A local’s spot that’s about the food not the decor. Thinks tiles, simple tables and chairs. The extensive menu features an assortment of dishes from across China, some familiar and some not so familiar. Xi Long Bao are one of the most popular items on the menu, as is the Shanghai chive and pork dumplings soup.
We opted for the chive and pork dumpling soup, which is literally a serve of dumplings in a light broth. The broth itself is quite plain, but the dumplings are generously packed with filling and very tasty. Moving beyond dumplings, we found two dishes that ended up being our favourites.
The sweet and sour ox tripe is fantastic, and a great choice for anyone who’s unsure about trying trip. The tripe has just the right amount of chewiness to it, and is cooked properly to ensure that it has a mild, inoffensive taste. it’s covered in a sweet and sour sauce, and served with thin cucumber strips which provide a nice freshness to each bite. Another highlight is the Nanjing style beef brisket noodle soup. There’s a generous serving of noodles, brisket, and bok choy in a complex, flavoursome broth. It’s a simple dish that’s very comforting.
DC Dumpling Specialist can get busy but tables rotate fast so if there is a wait it’s never too long. They also do a bustling take away trade if you’re looking to grab something to eat at home.
