Doubleview Bowling Club, Doubleview

PERTH | Everyone loves finding great food in unexpected places, and at Doubleview Bowling Club, that’s exactly what you’ll discover. On Wednesday and Friday nights at the suburban bowling club, chef couple Jacob D’Vauz and Anisha Halik aka pop-up ‘Special Delivery’, are serving up exciting, delicious food, at affordable prices.

The bowling club itself ticks all of the boxes, a friendly, unpretentious community spot filled with friends and families of all ages. A solid selection of drink are keenly priced, served by staff that know their stuff. There’s lawn bowls outside, a large central dining space, and bar section with sports on the TVs to the side. And yes, there’s a meat tray raffle.

Jacob’s CV is an impressive one. He’s worked at Rockpool, Madalena’s, Tiny’s and Uncle Joe’s, designed menus for Potato Head Beach Club Bali, and served as a personal chef for Paul McCartney. He took over the reigns at The Doubleview Bowling Club as a way of being able to nurture his creative side, step back from the intensity of large kitchens, and to spend more time with his young family.

It pays to get in early for dinner. Jacob and Anisha do around 300 covers a night, and specials in particular, tend to sell out fast. The menu features five constantly changing options, a cheeseburger, fish and chips, hot chips, and a few kids options. It’s a showcase of Western Australian produce and artisans.

When I visited, it was garlic parmesan focaccia with buffalo mozzarella and yuzu olive oil; fresh caught Fremantle tuna and citrus crudo; and peri peri rotisserie chicken with tomato and paprika salad, lime crema, and crispy potatoes. The best thing I ate in Perth this trip was Jacob’s melt in your mouth slow cooked black pepper beef, served with house made egg noodles, ginger scallion relish, Asian greens, and peanuts. Utterly divine. Dessert, dark chocolate mousse with burnt blood orange and miso caramel gelato, was another home run.

Maybe when you visit, the chicken will feature a Japanese glaze. Perhaps the beef will be in the form of rendang, or a satay dish. Instead of tuna crudo, it might be Shark Bay scallops with sambal tumis, chicken fat butter, and lime. What you can be assured of, is that it’ll be creative and mouth-watering.
