MELBOURNE | Located a few floors up in a nondescript office building in Camberwell, East of Everything rewards those who walk up the unmarked stairs and through the saloon doors with one of the best drinking experiences in this part of town. The space is simply furnished, with several tables and seats, and screens showing either live sports or anything else the bar staff might want to put on. To the side is a balcony which affords views of trains coming in and out of Camberwell station. Owned by the team that own cocktail spot Bar None in the same building’s basement, and Po’ Boy Quarter and Pretty Mama, East of Everything sees the team try their hand at craft beer.

Across the 5 taps and 20 plus bottle selection is a constantly rotating selection of local and imported craft beers, featuring core range, seasonal, and one-off brews covering a wide range of styles. During our most recent visit, we spotted the seasonal Black Ruby Imperial Stout from one of our favourite Kiwi breweries, Kereru Brewing Company. For those who don’t feel like beer, there’s a focused but quality wine list, and a small selection of quality spirits and cocktails too. Food wise, it’s what you’d expect given the owner’s other ventures – New Orleans, Mexican and other American comfort food that hits the spot. We highly recommend the Po’ Boys and the deliciously dense mac & cheese croquettes.

Friendly service, a no fuss attitude towards things, and quality food and drinks make East of Everything a hidden bar well worth seeking out, especially given its location in a part of town that’s historically been a bit of a black spot when it comes to quality drinking options.
