MELBOURNE | El Mirage is a Brunswick East cafe, set back slightly from Lygon Street, that’s been doing its thing for just over 10 years. Located next door to another Brunswick East brunch favourite, East Elevation it’s managed to stay popular by doing what it does well – offering simple, quality breakfasts and great coffee with friendly service.
Walk in and you’ll see that this is a real local’s place. Young couples, people dining post-exercise, people with children and dogs, you get the picture. The venue is open, light and airy, with polished concrete floors and a curved wooden feature that spans the entire left side of the cafe.
While the cafe has tried to dabble in some fancier dishes in recent times, where it excels is with the simple dishes. Jalapeno corn fitters are a highlight, served with charred corn, fried halloumi, avocado salsa, poached eggs and a lime and coriander labne with either bacon or salmon. It’s texturally exciting and has lot of flavours which balance well. A more inventive dish, the Benedict Souffle, doesn’t quite hit the mark. Potato and thyme souffle pikelets are served with shaved ham, butternut pumpkin puree, sugar snap peas and burnt butter puree. It’s quite a sweet dish that lacks texture. With a bit of tweaking it could be a winner however.
A return to form comes with the coconut chia pudding – just the right combination of chia pudding, mango, whipped coconut, mixed berries, granola and tuile biscuit. Fresh, tasty and very satisfying.
Coffee is great, and service is attentive and friendly. As long as you order right, you’ll have a very enjoyable time at El Mirage.
