PORTLAND | Ex Novo Brewing Co Portland was born out of founder and former engineer Joel Gregory’s desire to combine his passion for good beer with his desire to make a difference in the world. Ex Novo means “from nothing” and comes from the fact that the brewery was started from nothing. A year of fundraising and an Indiegogo campaign at the end helped to provide the funds required and in July 2014 the brewery opened for business. What happens to all of the profits? Well this not-for-profit brewery donates all profits to organisations who help bring “a better world and hope to places where it is scarce”. Currently, Ex Novo’s profits go to Friends of the Children, IJM, Impact NW, and Mercycorps.

What about the venue and its offerings though? Ex Novo is housed in a 1940s barn-like building with a high exposed barrel truss roof and space to eat and drink downstairs and upstairs on a mezzanine level. Beers on tap span a range of styles and contain a mixture of classics along with more experimental offerings, including some great sour and barrel-aged beers. Favourites of ours include the “Vanporter”, a smooth coconut vanilla porter that has the vanilla beans and coconut added after fermentation and “Cactus Wins The Lottery”, a classic Berliner Weiss with a twist due to the addition of prickly pear. You never know what you’ll find though – a few flagship beers are on tap year round but mostly it’s seasonal and one-off beers.

Food wise, it’s all about casual pub food using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. Think things like mac & cheese, loaded potato wedges, street corn fritters, salads, tacos and sandwiches. If you feel like mixing your eating and drinking at the same time, try the beer milkshake, or the beer and cheese pairing which matches four cheeses with four beers.

Drink good beer in a great venue and help out some great causes at the same time. Why wouldn’t you visit?
