MELBOURNE | Premium cocktail bar and lounge The Emerson, centrally located on Commercial Road in South Yarra, has transformed its rooftop into a stunning winter wonderland. In collaboration with Asian restaurant Susie Wong in Windsor, The Emerson have created a south-east Asian and Japanese inspired ‘Winter in Asia’ experience, running for six weeks, from 15 July until 28 August.

The luxurious rooftop space has been kitted out with floral decoration, candles, silk draping and festive paper lanterns, transporting diners into a South East Asian and Japanese inspired utopia. And no need to worry about the cold, The Emerson has you covered in their enclosed outdoor space with multiple warm heaters to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere. Overall, the interior design is seamlessly elegant and stylish.

The City Lane was invited to sample a selection of dishes from the exquisite menu and were keen to see what was on offer. The owner of Susie Wong, Peter Capurso and his team have designed a vibrant menu featuring everyone’s favorite spring rolls, dumplings, bao, noodles, teppanyaki, banh mi and much more.

After getting started with refreshing French martinis, our first course was crispy Cambodian turmeric and lemongrass chicken ribs, with sriracha honey for that perfect balance between sweet and savoury. This was accompanied by beautifully cooked Seared Angus beef and lemongrass skewers with Nahm Jim Jaew. This dish was bursting with flavour, intensified further by the tasty sauce. Particularly delicious were the Sichuan pepper pulled pork bao with hoisin mayonnaise, such a tender and satisfying dish.

The final course of the evening was a Warm Asian Salad, a combination of warm Asian mushroom, edamame, pickled kohlrabi, bitter melon and black vinegar dressing. This dish was the highlight, as the interesting flavours and textures fused perfectly together – strong without being overpowering. This simultaneously creative and warming winter dish perfectly epitomises the flawless collaboration between The Emerson and Susie Wong.
