MELBOURNE | Far Side Beers is a bar and takeaway beer bottle shop in Hawthorn East that provides one of the best options in this part of town for those looking for quality beer. Owned by Julien Nell and his parents Florence and David, Far Side Beers is notable for a down to earth honesty that can be missing in drinking establishments sometimes. You actually see Julien and his parents working at the bar, and there’s a real passion for only stocking beers that they love. And stock beers they do – the back room features over 200 different beers on the shelves, which you can purchase to take away or drink in the bar, be it the front or middle indoor sections, or the surprisingly spacious beer garden our the back.
There’s a lot of quality on the shelves, with local and imported beers from a whole range of breweries on offer, including several beers you don’t often see here. We’ve even spotted beer from the USA’s fabled Cigar City on the shelves. It’s not just the selection that’s impressive at Far Side Beers though, but also the dedication to quality. Often when you purchase imported beer from a craft beer bottle shop it’ll be several months, if not over a year since the production date – fine for stouts and beers that benefit from ageing, but not so good when you’re talking about things like West Coast IPAs, which should be enjoyed fresh before the hop characteristics decline. At Far Side Beers, nothing is too old if it shouldn’t be, which is something we applaud.
On the six taps, its mostly local beers, with a focus on independent breweries. During our most recent visit we saw the fantastic Jersey Caramel Stout by Geelong’s Odyssey, one of our favourite beers of GABS 2017, on tap, along with other favourites from breweries like Nomad, Sailor’s Grave, and Modus Operandi. For those who want something other than beer, there are a few quality local wines and craft spirits to enjoy any way you’d like, be it on the rocks or as a cocktail.
Far Side Beers don’t have a kitchen, but the BYO food policy and good number of nearby quality restaurants that you can order delivery from means you won’t go hungry.
