MELBOURNE | Ferdydurke, the bar not the 1937 novel by Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz, is one of those fantastic Melbourne laneway bars. Run by the same people behind Section 8 and B.East, Ferdydurke is located up an unassuming few flights of stairs and rewards those who find it.

The loftesque space is eclectic and simple, with lots of brick and exposed beams and the drinks list features a focused but quality range of cocktails, beers and wines. We particularly like the descriptions of some of the cocktails. Take the Señor Martinez for example, which is descriped as “The story of Señor Martinez, ancestor of the martini. Who takes an unexpected journey to Oaxaca and falls in love with a smoking Mexican. An amorous marriage of Mezcal and Antica Formula is witnessed by the savory ‘best man’ Celery Bitters and luscious ‘Bridesmaid’ Orange Bitters. Please, raise a toast to the lovely couple.” Thankfully, it’s not just style over substance and the cocktails are very tasty.

Bar snacks are more than just an afterthought too, with a solid selection of burgers, hot dogs and cheese melt sandwiches, although we do miss some of the tasty Vietnamese options that used to grace the menu. The Yetta’s – a Brooklyn meatball slider with tomato and vodka glaze, beer cheese sauce and house pickles is particularly tasty, as is the truffle mac & cheese with bacon crumbs.

There’s an eclectic array of DJs playing all kinds of music most nights and, combined with everything else that Ferdydurke gets right, time spent here is always a good idea.
