MELBOURNE | Foreigner Brewing Company is a Brunswick brewery that’s doing things a bit differently than many of the craft beer breweries that have popped up in recent years. Instead of focusing on IPAs, or on-trend styles like sours, owners Mira Koman and Peter Denison are drawing upon their Czech heritage. Yes, this means beers like Czech Pilsners and Lagers, are the signatures of the brewery. Indeed, the recipes were designed with Mira and Peter’s friend Petr Petruzalek, who spent over 20 years brewing at Pilsner Urquell.
It’s not just about Czech style beer though, there’s an IPA (every brewery has to have one right?) and we were very surprised by how good it was given the primary focus of the brewery. There’s also a refreshing summer ale. For us, the standouts here are the Silent Hunter Pilsner and the Dark Ale. The Silent Hunter is a 4.6% ABV Czech Pilsner brewed with Saaz hops for a mild bitterness and dry finish. The Dark Ale is a 5.8% brew that has notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee and is delicious.
