ST. GALLEN | Flawil-based Genussbäckerei Lichtensteiger took over popular St. Gallen bakery Al Forno in April 2019, which saw Lichtensteiger’s pasty and confectionery expertise combine with Al Forno’s highly regarded take-away offering.
I visited as I’d heard that this was one of the best places in St Gallen to get gipfeli, and while not an expert on the croissant x pretzel hybrid, I have to say that I was very impressed. The exterior is crunchy and slightly salty, like a prezel, while the inside is like a dense, yet still flaky croissant. A hybrid pastry that truly works. I tried a few others around town that day and the version at Genussbäckerei Lichtensteiger was hands down the best one.
Along with their highly regarded gipfeli, Genussbäckerei Lichtensteiger sell an assortment of pastries, cakes, baked goods and chocolates, along with things like take away rolls and sandwiches. Visit and grab a gipfeli and something else that takes your fancy. You won’t be disappointed.
