LONDON | Good & Proper Tea Clerkenwell started as a kickstarter campaign featuring a 1974 Citroen H van serving loose leaf, custom-brewed tea. Founder and owner Emilie Holmes saw that the coffee culture in the UK had improved by leaps and bounds and after wondering why the UK’s tea culture hadn’t done the same thing, decided to be the change she wanted to see. The tea van was a success, and a few years later the first physical store in Clerkenwell, along with a Shoreditch kiosk opened. The Leather Lane locator is where we decided to visit to have our first Good & Proper Tea experience.

As the name suggests, it’s all about good and proper tea here. Teas are sourced from across the globe, and the origins of each tea, who harvest and crafts it, are made available to customers. Each tea has a story, and sustainability and ethics are particularly important. On our most recent visit we enjoyed the beautifully delicate No. 11 White Peony. If you don’t know what tea you want to drink, the staff are more than happy to discuss the various options on offer with you – there are generally over 25 teas to choose from at a given point in time.

Food wise it’s a selection of pastries and baked goods, along with a few other bits and pieces, including the popular crumpets. You can also buy from a range of teaware and teapots, and you can of course purchase loose leaf tea to take home with your too.
