MELBOURNE | Hargreaves Hill Brewing Co. was founded in 2004 in Steels Creek, by husband and wife team Simon Walkenhorst and Beth Williams. They started the brewery with the aim of bringing better beer to the market, and were one of the pioneers of the craft brewery movement in Victoria. The Yarra Glen taproom and restaurant opened in 2007, and then in 2009, the brewery was completely destroyed, along with most of the houses and businesses in the area, in the Black Saturday fires. Instead of calling it a day, Hargreaves Hill was able to continue to brew thanks to other brewers offering up their facilities while the brewery was rebuilt bigger and better in Lilydale.
The taproom and restaurant is housed in a historic bank building, and features an impressive exterior and interior. There are several levels and dining areas inside, as well as seating outside making the place great for a group meal or just a few drinks with friends. On the taps you’ll find the full range of core beers along with seasonal and one-off brews. Try the well balanced, dry hopped ESB or, if it’s available, the famous RIS, a Russian Imperial Stout that’s brewed with a complex grist of 4 dark malts and released once a year.
The food at Hargreaves Hill is much more than an afterthought too. It’s all about simple, tasty food made using local, seasonal produce from vendors like The Yarra Valley Dairy, Mount Zero Olives, Little Creek Cattle Company, The Yarra Valley Tea Company, and Fruition Bakery. It’s only a one pager with things like burgers, salads, pastas and the like, but everything is quality. Our recommendation is the New Orleans style fried chicken – it comes with a trio of tasty sauces and is some of the best fried chicken we’ve ever eaten in Victoria – moist, crispy and full of flavour.
