LONDON | Hawksmoor Spitalfields is where the Hawksmoor story began, and 10 years after opening its still going strong. A steakhouse first and foremost, Hawksmoor is famous for selling what many, including ourselves, consider to be the best steaks in the UK. Beef is supplied by artisan butcher Ginger Pig, and is sold either as individual steaks or by weight. There’s a board on the wall that shows the cuts and sizes available on the day and, as service progresses and the steaks sell out, they’re struck off the board. For us, Porterhouse cooked medium rare is the cut of choice.
It’s not just about steak at Hawksmoor either, with Tamworth pork ribs, seafood and a range of tasty sides available. The bone marrow served with grilled onion and toast is a thing of beauty. If it’s something quick and easy you’re after, try the fantastic Hawksmoor burger and some triple cooked chips.
Along with steaks, Hawksmoor has built a reputation for its quality cocktails and you’ll find them, along with fantastic wines and local craft beers on the drinks menu. In fact, head downstairs and you’ll find the Spitalfields Bar – a more recent addition to the venue with a cozy, speakeasy atmosphere and a focus on cocktails and the more casual eats off the menu. Try the signature Shaky Pete’s Ginger Brew, or Georgia Peach Julep.
There might be multiple Hawksmoor restaurants in London today (as well as one in Manchester) but Will Beckett and Huw Gott’s original Hawksmoor manages to bring a nostalgic feeling to those who walk through it and remember where it all began.
