MELBOURNE | Henry St Brewhouse is a bit of a local’s secret, hidden in the backstreets of the industrial part of Kensington. It’s the baby of owners/brewers (and fomer structural engineers) Zack Skerrit and Phil Quayle, who started home brewing in Phil’s backyard on Henry St before diving into things full time. When you talk about local and small scale, this is what you’re talking about – all beers are brewed using “Blue Billy” a sophisticated 100L three vessel, single tier pilot system that the guys engineered and built from scratch.
The “built from scratch” ethos is something that’s obvious throughout the brewery. Most of what you see when you enter was built by Zack and Phil, which gives what should be a rather sterlie garage like warehouse space a surprisingly homely feel to it – it’s feels more like a backyard and shed rather than a warehouse. When we visited the place was packed and had a lively, community atmosphere about it.
As for the beers themselves, there’s usually ten beers on tap – five core range and fiveo seasonal/special brews. When we visited we enjoyed the core range beers, all solid examples of their styles. Their original beer, the “Blue Billy Amber” is particularly tatsy. As a whole though, it was the special brews which really impressed, in particular the tea infused IPA “Monsieur Grey” and the “Haymaker Coffee Porter”.
Currently the brewery is only open on Friday afternoons and occasional Saturday events, but it’s a work in progress so expect longer opening hours and more events down the track.
