MELBOURNE | Holy Moly Hawthorn might not be a place you’ve heard of but if we told you “downstairs from Untz Untz” you’d likely know the spot. The tongue in cheek religious tinged venue is part sports bar, part diner, and a whole lot of fun. As you’d expect, things aren’t taken too seriously here – a Shane Warne DJ booth, drawings of the Virgin Mary, and Michael Jordan “learning is cool” posters all form part of an intentionally kitsch interior.
Owner Ben Foley wanted “cool” sports bar, with a college vibe, affordable drinks, and cheap pizzas to attract nearby students and Holy Moly hits the mark. When we visited on a Saturday, AFL was playing on several screens, and good tunes had our heads bopping. If there’s no live sports on, you’ll generally see classic sports games being shown in their entirety. Los Angeles Lakers vs. Boston Celtics, 1984 NBA Finals series anyone?
We were surprised to see a few craft options on the taps, but do be warned about the “Holy Moly” beer – when we asked who brewed it we were told that it’s actually just Carlton Draught. Having said that if you like Carlton Draught then there’s your cheap jugs of beer sorted, but for us the cans of Colonial Pale Ale are the way to go. If it’s not beer you want, there are a few wines, and a cocktail list that’s been designed by Jenna Hemsworth (ex Black Pearl), which puts interesting twists on the classics.
The cheap pizza menu has been put together by Henry Chan (Lucky Coq, Bimbo Deluxe) so you know what you’re getting here – tasty pizzas with a good range of topping selections that offer value for money. Pizzas $5 from 12-3pm and 6-9pm Mon-Sat, and all day Sun. The parmarama, which is basically a chicken parma atop a pizza, is one of our favourites.
