MELBOURNE | The Hotel Esplanade is a true Melbourne institution, and has been operating in one form or another since 1878. The grand venue was purchased by Sand Hill Road (Richmond Club Hotel, Garden State, Prahran Hotel) in May 2017, and after closing down and undergoing significant renovations, reopened in December 2018.
The venue now features several distinct areas, with many of the formerly unused parts of the hotel now open to the public. The venue now features 12 bars, three stages and two restaurants across six levels. Famed band-room, the Gershwin Room looks much the same as it ever did, while other parts of the venue are unrecognisable.
The front terrace is pared pack and open, with a beach shack feel and large front-facing windows that offer views of St Kilda and Port Phillip Bay. The balcony has its own bar and views out to the water, while the upstairs cocktail bar Ghost of Alfred Felton is an ode to the charitable philanthropist of the same name who spent much time in the rooms up here. There’s also another cocktail bar up here, the Green Room, and a basement bar.
For food there are two main space. The Espy Kitchen features two grills, two wood-fired pizza ovens and a rotisserie, and is where you can get an assortment of pub classics done right, along with a few creative takes on the classics. Upstairs you’ll find 70-seat Cantonese restaurant, Mya Tiger, which also has a bar attached to it.
Sand Hill Road have done an amazing job with the Hotel Esplanade. They’ve kept what worked intact while greatly expanding upon the parts of the venue that were run down and inaccessible to the public. You could easily spend an entire day inside here bar hopping from bar to bar withing the huge space and not get bored.
