MELBOURNE | Hoyts Lux, for those who haven’t been, is the upmarket cinema experience offered by Hoyts cinemas that aims to attract the Netflix and chill crowd back to the movies with an experience that’s a cut above the usual. Think plush reclining chairs with remote controls, in seat food and drink purchase and delivery and the press of a button, and quality food and drink.

Hoyts recently teamed up with celebrity chef Manu Fieldel to revamp their Lux menu and the result is a menu that uses gourmet quality ingredients to combine classic French flavours with modern twists. There are also, of course, twists on cinema favourites. We were invited to the launch and were quite impressed with the food – it’s all very tasty and certainly lives up to the ‘Lux’ branding. Think French style beef bourguignon pie, encased in Carême sour cream shortcrust pastry and topped with creamy potato purée and rosemary leaves, bao filled with crispy confit duck, house made shitake & cucumber pickle, spring onion & ginger mayo and a smoky hoisin sauce, and a Mexican style pulled pork burger served in a soft milk bun with a red cabbage & carrot slaw, corn & bean fritter and chipotle aioli.

There’s several pages of food on the menu and a lot of variety – just make sure you’re prepared to spend a bit more than you might normally expect for this kind of food. It is, after all, still the cinema.

The new menu isn’t restricted to Melbourne either – it’s also available at Hoyts Lux cinemas in Sydney and Perth.
