MELBOURNE | Known for their authentic, Italian-style gelato and creative flavours, Il Dolce Freddo adds a colourful, multicultural flair to the otherwise Italian-orientated Lygon Street in Carlton. Since its’ opening in 2001, this ice cream store has been known for its uniquely creamy gelato texture and depth of flavour.

Taking inspiration from his travels around Italy, founding owner Robert Mazzolini returned to Australia and introduced Melbourne to an edible way of life that it had never encountered before. Adding to Lygon Street’s long-steeped history of Italian culture, Il Dolce Freddo’s traditional Italian methods of gelato-making produced popular classic flavours such as hazelnut, pistachio, and the award-winning ferrero focher.

To mix things up, Mazzolini’s originality began taking an Oriental direction, creating the first batch of Italian-style durian sorbet. Highly sought after, particularly by Melbourne’s South East Asian origin population, other Asian-influenced flavours soon followed suit, including pandan & coconut, purple yam, matcha, red bean, lychee, and black sesame.

The year 2014 saw the addition of Andy Northrop, who trained under Mazzolini to learn his methods and to continue creating the high quality gelato for which Il Dolce Freddo was known. Now solely owned by Andy and her husband, James Northrop, the business is thriving thanks to their authenticity, alongside the constant release of new limited edition flavours, with the most recent one being Sichuan peanut with chili chocolate (wait for the impressive layered intensity of spice after each mouthful). James’ decade-long career as a chef reinvigorated the brand upon his entrance into the business, attributed to his experience working in restaurants including Rockpool Bar & Grill, Romulus & Remus, and The Auburn.

Today, Il Dolce Freddo maintains the highest quality of gelato and sorbet production through the sourcing of fresh, high quality and seasonal ingredients, as well as through the prioritized maintenance of their machinery equipment and technique-specific processes. Their cabinet display impresses with their beautiful array of varied flavours, with further combinations including the yoghurt-based fig, jam & almonds, and Aussie-influenced milo. With the potential to sample any number of flavours that tickle your fancy, we guarantee you will have a tough time deciding on just one!
