MELBOURNE | Industry Beans is one of my favourite spots for coffee and breakfast in Melbourne. They’ve expanded to Sydney and Brisbane since opening their first roastery and cafe in Fitzroy back in 2013, but it’s never been at the expense of quality.
The original location closed its doors in the middle of 2021, and while it will be missed, the Industry Beans team are staying true to their roots. Their new Fitzroy flagship cafe and HQ has opened up just a few metres up the road from the original.
It’s a coffee roastery, café, coffee bar, retail shop and training facility rolled into one. Design wise it takes its cues from the company’s newer cafes. Bright and airy, with lots of white, grey, and cream, and natural light streaming through the windows. Lots of reclaimed wood, natural materials, and plants.
The large coffee bar greets you when you walk in. To right is a retail section where you can purchase beans, coffee equipment, and more, and behind this, the 100 capacity dining area. From the dining area, you can see the roastery in action. The small coffee window that was operating during lockdown immediately next to the main space is also still open.
The offering is much the same as it’s always been. Brilliant coffee, roasted on site, using the best quality beans sourced from around the world. There’s house blends and rotating seasonal beans, brewed almost any way you could want, be it an espresso or filter drink you’re after. For something a bit different, try one of their bubble coffees – the pandan one is my favourite.
Food wise, it’s an assortment of delicious seasonal all day breakfast and lunch options, many of which you’ll recognise from the original Fitzroy cafe and other locations. The focus is on fresh, seasonal produce, and native ingredients. Three of my favourites are the pandan bubble waffle, salmon garden, and coffee rubbed wagyu burger. There’s also a few pastries and snacks available to go. The peanut butter brownie is a real winner.
Unlike some of the other locations, there’s no liquor license or night menu at the Fitzroy cafe. For breakfast and lunch, and just as a place to grab a coffee, however, it remains one of the best in town.
