MELBOURNE | Dinner parties. The eating, drinking and socialising with friends part is always a lot of fun but the prep work and post-party clean up, not so much. This is where Intertain comes in to the equation. Founder Josiah Ng came up with the idea when organising a dinner party for his wife’s 30th birthday in 2015. He wanted to book a private chef to take care of all the cooking and found that the theory was much better than the cumbersome, complex, time consuming reality of the process.
What Intertain aims to do is to create a simple, streamlined, affordable way for people to book private chefs for their own dinner parties online. Chefs set their own menus and prices, and work the hours that suit them, while diners get to choose from a diverse pool of chefs, with experience at restaurants like Rockpool, Nobu, Susie Wong, and Quay. All chefs have at least five years experience, and the range of cuisines on offer is varied – think Japanese, Italian, French, Malaysian, Southern American and more.
Customers can choose from a range of options, from canapé-style dinner services to shared family-style meals, degustations and high teas. Prices range from $44 to $220 per person for a three-course meal, while canapés typically cost $40 to $70 per person. As well as the food, several add-on options are available like wine matching and floral arrangements. What we love is that the chefs do all of the work – they shop for the ingredients, prepare, cook, and serve the food, and then clean up after the meal. Of course the experience also incorporates one of the things we love most about sitting at the bench next to an open kitchen – you get to watch the action and interact with the chef.
Intertain is currently operating in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, and Perth, with plans to expand further, including overseas, in the future.
