MELBOURNE | Located on the top floor of Westfield Doncaster, Ionio: Greek Charcoal BBQ has recently teamed up with Eat It Up Creative to rebrand their restaurant, offering a menu more focused on authentic Greek flavours. The City Lane was invited to experience their new menu as part of a ‘Blogger’s Greek Feast’ event hosted by Eat It Up Creative’s founder, Dani Venn.
The atmosphere within Ionio: Greek Charcoal BBQ is welcoming with an open-spaced venue looking out to the Melbourne city skyline through tall glass windows. The team at this venue are used to hosting guests of both small and large groups, as evidenced from their professionalism and calm and friendly demeanour.
Their revamped menu is designed for sharing, ranging from meze (small dishes) to sides, salads and main dishes. Some of their tasty homemade meze include house-made dips (Hommus, Tzatziki, Taramasalata, and Beetroot & Feta) served with fluffy pita bread, decadently delicious fried cheese in the form of Grilled Dodoni Saganaki (kefalogravieria cheese with oregano and lemon), and Fried Cheese Balls (kefalogravieria cheese with lemon, our personal favourite). Salads can be as simple as “The Greek” (tomato, cucumber, red onion, feta, olives, oregano) or can have a bit of personality and crunch like the “Goddess of Grains” (quinoa, barley, freekah & farro, currants, pomegranates).
For meat lovers, the kitchen’s charcoal-fired rotisserie adds a subtle hint of smokiness and loads of flavour to their slow-roasted meats, which can be used to fill gyros, with the option of adding chips such as their “Loaded Gyros Fries”. With other menu items such as burgers, skewers, char-gilled rainbow trout wrapped in vine leaves, and “Homestyle Moussaka” (beef, lamb, eggplant, potato, béchamel), there is something for everyone.
To finish with something sweet, we would highly recommend either the smashed baklava (with toasted walnut and honey ice cream), which contains all of the elements of a traditional baklava strewn across the plate, or the warm bougasta with cinnamon sugar as both of these desserts ticked the right boxes in the flavour and texture departments. All of this food can be washed down with wines originating from Australia or New Zealand, and Greek beer imported from Greece, further highlighting the authenticity of what this restaurant offers. So, whether you are looking for a quick pre-movie meal, or a feast for the family, the newly refined menu of authentic Greek flavours at Ionio: Greek Charcoal BBQ is one you don’t want to miss.
