MELBOURNE | JD’s Burgers offers a truly unique burger experience with their high quality Asian Fusion burgers, inspired by owner Daniel’s extensive travels and research both within Australia and internationally. Their significant point of difference is the house-made secret fusion seasonings and sauces used in their burgers, which comprise of spices and flavours blended together from different cuisines, including Japanese, American, Australian, Korean, Hong Kong, Thai, Indonesian and Taiwanese.
Following some slight modifications to their menu in early 2017, JD’s Burgers now use 100% Pure Black Angus Grass-fed beef patties sourced from a secret supplier in Australia, and they have swapped their previous burger buns for a fluffier French brioche variety. We were invited to sample their new menu, and to judge for ourselves how good their highly acclaimed burgers and fries really are.
Relocating from Kew to Mont Albert about a year ago, JD’s Burgers have maintained their emphasis on the humble burger, serving up deceptively ordinary looking burgers that pack a flavour punch. Beef burgers are the specialty here, but JD’s menu also features chicken, fish and vegetarian burgers.
Amongst their beef burger varieties are their top three most recommended burgers, two of which we tried. The number one most recommended burger is Goku’s Fusion, whose beef patty is marinaded in JD’s secret fusion seasoning, topped with melting American cheese, crispy grilled bacon, Spanish onions, lettuce, tomato and JD’s new secret fusion sauce.
The second most recommended burger is the Black Goku, featuring a beef patty marinaded in JD’s secret fusion seasoning, house-made black pepper sauce, melting American cheese, crispy bacon, grilled mushrooms, Spanish onions, lettuce, tomato and Japanese pepper mayo.
Both burgers don’t rate highly in presentation, looking quite flat and unexciting when presented on the table. However, biting into them proves a different story. The subtle flavour of Asian spices infused into the beef patties generate intrigue, making you want to dive in for more. For us, the Goku’s Fusion burger had more flavour in its beef patty, however the Black Goku burger was a better all-round burger thanks to the peppery hit from the black pepper sauce and earthy taste of the grilled mushrooms. The beef patties look overcooked but still produce a juicy consistency within.
It would be remiss to not pair a burger with some beer-battered fries. Piccolo’s Loaded Chips proudly represents Japanese flavours through Piccolo’s special aioli, Furikake seaweed and sesame seeds drizzled on top of JD’s famous beer-battered fries. For a more Americanised version, the Molten Cheese & Bacon Loaded Beer-Battered Chips are topped with cheese sauce and bacon pieces. We would recommend getting a dipping sauce to accompany the chips, particularly JD’s Secret Fusion Sauce which is fused with a Japanese style mayo, and the Tuffle’s Truffle sauce whose truffle flavour is strong but balances well within the creamy aioli.
Located next to a train station, this humble joint combines Daniel’s love for Asian fusion burgers with his love for Dragon Ball Z. Posters and small figurines decorate the venue in this cult Japanese cartoon theme, and the burgers are even named after some of the comic’s characters. A perfect fit in Melbourne, combining our multicultural vibes with our love for burgers, we would definitely recommend dropping in to JD’s Burgers for an experience that will take your taste buds on a culinary journey around the world, from a single bite of a burger.
