TOKYO | Jeremiah is an award winning bar, by owner/bartender Keisuke Yamamoto, in a relatively quite part of Shinjuku. Hidden behind an unassuming door, away from the hustle and bustle of the neighbourhood, it’s a bar that rewards those who find it.
The bar is named after, and inspired by, bartender Jeremiah “Jerry” Thomas, who in 1862 published the world’s first cocktail recipe book, The Bartender’s Guide. Jerry owned and operated several bars and saloons in New York City, and was one of the pioneers who popularised cocktails in the United States.
Step inside Jeremiah, and you’re transported the the 19th century taverns of New York City, albeit with an old school New York hip-hop playlist. Think timber furnishings, old photos and newspaper clippings, intricate ceiling mouldings, retro lamps, and Edison globes.
The cocktail menu features classic drinks from The Bartender’s Guide, with a Japanese twist. The Reviver Blazer, for example, is a take on the Blue Blazer. It’s made with keffir lime gin, umeshu, jasmine, lemon and absinthe – theatrically mixed while flaming. The Fatman’s Fashioned, meanwhile, spins the Old Fashioned with Mitcher’s and Bulleit Bourbon, peanut butter, Amaro Averna, blueberry, and bitters. It’s topped with maple bacon, and a crispy waffle. Both are outstanding.
Classics versions of all of the cocktails are available, along with a selection of wine, spirits, and beer. For food, it’s a small snack menu featuring things like fried chicken with honey mustard dip, fish and chips, house made crisps with ranch dip, cheese, and charcuterie.
Keep an eye out for any guest bartenders that might be in town too. Keisuke often teams up with owners/bartenders from some of the world’s best bars for one night only pop-ups. Recent events have featured Brian Liu from Taiwan’s FReNCHIE FReNCHIE, and Chanchai Rodbamrung from Bar Scofflaws in Bangkok.
