MELBOURNE | Katuk is a small, somewhat hidden bar on Chapel Street that offers a lot more than initially meets the eye. Located up a flight of stairs, the main bar is small and narrow, with some a few cozy couches at the front. Walk towards the back though and the space opens up to a light filled area full of couches, booths and comfy cushion filled cubby holes. To the side is a small outdoor area which provides yet another space to chill.
The atmosphere is laid back – cool yet quirky, and without an ounce of pretension. Staff are cheerful and friendly, and adept at making a wide array of cocktails whether it’s the classics or something a bit different. Try the Katuk’s Passion – Absolut Vanilla Vodka, passion fruit and elderflower syrup, apple guava, with a touch of Chartreuse for a nice little kick. For those who don’t want cocktails, the selection of whiskey is a cut above most bars in the area, and there’s also a decent range of wine and beer.
For food, there are a few bar snacks and a decent selection of jaffles. We like the Philly Cheese Steak, with roast beef, cheese sauce, and green capsicum, and the Buffalo Chicken filled with chicken, salsa, and hot sauce.
