MELBOURNE | King & Godfree is a Melbourne food institution. Established in 1884 by George Godfree and Edwin King, it wasn’t until it was taken over by Carlo Valmorbida in 1955 that its iconic status was cemented.

For 60 years King & Godfree was where you’d go for your Italian staples like parmesan cheese, Lavazza coffee, and deli meats. For many, this was their first taste of Italy.

In 2015 the shop closed down for renovations and it reopened in early 2018 as a very different proposition. We’ve talked about the rooftop bar Johnny’s Green Room before, but recently we were invited to check out the street level cafe, K&G Gastronomia Deli & Espresso Bar.

Walking inside it feels quintessentially Italian, stools line the windows and the bar is filled with patrons on stools enjoying coffee, aperetivos, and snacks. A large wine cabinet separates the room. Squeeze past the tables on the side, past the cabinet and you’re greeted with a larger space with more seating and a shelves full of Italian goods to purchase. The deli counter is back here too offering an assortment of cold meats, cheeses, take home meals and more.

The space is exactly the kind of place to pop into on the way home or to work, to grab some supplies and a quick coffee or cocktail. Each drink comes with a small plate of cicchetti like crisps, cheese, and olives, so you can have a snack without having to pay for more than your drink.

If you are looking for something more substantial, there’s a day and night menu featuring small dishes and larger plates. Think toast, eggs, sausages, panini and salumi by day and cheese and meat plates, pasta, and grilled fish by night. It’s simple, tasty food – perfect for the space and vibe.

A wine bar, Agostino Cellar Bar, will be opening just next door very soon, and if you want gelato, Pidaipo completes the K&G development perfectly.
