DURHAM | King’s Sandwich Shop is a Durham institution, and has been selling burgers, hot dogs, hand dipped shakes and fries to locals since 1942.
Located in Downtown Durham, King’s actually closed down in 2007 but was reopened in 2010 thanks to local entrepreneur TJ McDermott. Mc Dermott spruced the place up and brought everything up to code, keeping all the old favourites on the menu but making sure that only the best quality ingredient were used. Today, King’s is one of several businesses enjoying life in this rejuvenated part of Downtown.
The tiny venue is popular with those looking for a pre or post game feed before/after watching a game at the ball park, and with local workers looking for a tasty lunch. Try the famous cheeseburger, red hot dog, black bean burger, or the Cackalacky King – a BRAT (hot dog bun), loaded with pulled pork and house made slaw.
This part of Durham might be rapidly gentrifying but, thankfully, some things have stayed just the same.
