MELBOURNE | Kisses For Kaos in Preston is a venue that, when we first heard about it, didn’t really seem to make much sense – New Orleans soul food in a 1960 spy-comedy television series Get Smart themed space. The name of the venue actually comes from episode 13, season 1 of Get Smart.

The heritage listed building has a lounge room like vibe with leather chesterfields, vintage mirrors, curtains and a wooden/decorated brass bar. The front room ‘CONTROL’, is where you’ll find the full menu on offer while the ‘KAOS’ room behind it has a smaller menu and more of a drinks focus. Photos of Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, along with lots of scenes from Get Smart hang all over the venue, and the ‘CONTROL’ room even has a cone of silence. 1960s music plays through the speakers and it’s all a bit fun.

Beyond the gimmick, the good news is that the food at Kisses For Kaos is very tasty. There are four po’boys on the menu, plus an assortment of creole delights. The hush puppies, corn meal batter balls deep fried and served with low country BBQ sauce are very tasty, as are the pulled pork croquettes. The pork is slow cooked in low country bbq sauce, crumbed and served with creole mayonnaise. The jalapeno Monterey Jack mac & cheese is also fantastic, and of course there’s spicy fried chicken.

For something more substantial, try the crawfish bisque with lobster, prawn and sautéed trinity served in the shell with rice and spring onions. Also try the gumbo – sweet corn and holy trinity cooked slowly in a rich dark roux spiced with cajun seasoning. If you’ve got room for dessert, grab the lemon meringue pie with lemon curd, meringue, pie crumb, chantilly cream, berries, and coulis.

We’ve not been to Louisiana, so can’t speak to the authenticity of the food at Kisses For Kaos, but we can confirm that it’s all very delicious, and excellent value for money. The $29.50 per person shared option had so much food that our group of six needed a few take away containers. Combined with friendly service, a fun theme, and great drinks, it all adds up to a worthy Melbourne dining experience.
