MELBOURNE | KOME Eatery is a Japanese cafe in Docklands. The focus is on beautifully presented artisanal coffee, and comforting home-style Japanese meals. I recently popped in to take a look for What’s On Melbourne.
Located at the based of the ANZ Centre, KOME is particularly popular with the surrounding office crowd. The space is bright and airy, bathed in natural light that streams in from floor to ceiling windows. A calming white and blue colour palate informs the interior, with plush Japanese toys, figurines, and decals dotted about. Tote bags and omamori (traditional Japanese protective amulets) hang from the walls and are available to purchase.
Coffee, lattes, and a selection of dishes are available from the morning, with the full menu available from 10:30 onwards. It’s things like onigiri, shokupan sandos, ochazuke, and donburi. Fans of tonkatsu curry will enjoy the version here, a generous serving of golden-fried chicken served with a mildly spiced, rich curry on rice. Also try the unagi ochazuke. The soft, marinated unagi goes perfectly with the light dashi broth, tsukemono, and plump grains of Japanese rice.
For sandos, try the fish version instead of the chicken one. It uses panko-crumbed fried Alaskan pollock, a blend of tartare and tonkatsu sauce, cabbage, cucumber, and pickles. Set meals, which get you a choice of protein, rice, sides, and tsukemono, also hit the spot. The grilled salmon with mentaiko is particularly good.
For drinks, there’s quality coffee, matcha, hojicha, and Japanese teas. Creamy iced cloud lattes, and iced beverages are particularly popular, with options like iced cloud strawberry matcha, hojicha floats, and strawberry ade. There’s also a small alcoholic offering, featuring Japanese beer, local red and white wine, highballs, and sake.
