KAILUA | Lanikai Brewing Company is a Hawaiian craft brewery known for its innovative, flavourful beers, which take cues from premium, local, rare, and exotic ingredients grown by local farmers or foraged across the Pacific.
Co-founder, CEO, and brewmaster Steve Haumschild started Lanikai in 2015, after several years brewing beer at home. Steve and the team brew beers that have a sense of place, and highlight the flavours of Hawaii. Even the yeast and bacteria used is captured from the wild surrounds.
The taproom in Kailua is the best place to get a sense of what Lanikai do. It’s a relaxed space, bright and airy, reminiscent of a beach shack. On tap you’ll find the core range of beers, plus a rotating selection of limited brews. Tasting paddles are offered if you want to try a few things, and there’s a beer fridge with a few other options and beers to go.
Try the ‘Route 70’. It’s a 7.0% ABV Farmhouse Ale brewed with hibiscus flowers, and local organic Ohia Lehua Hawaiian honey. Also try the ‘Konane’, a 10.4% ABV Pastry Stout brewed with white chocolate, macadamia nut, and vanilla bean.
If beer’s not your thing, Lanikai also distils their own spirits, which are combined with other local island-inspired ingredients for cocktails. There’s a decent range of non-alcoholic options too.
If you’re hungry, its wood-fired pizzas, along with a few snacks and sandwiches on the menu.
