MELBOURNE | Located beside Balaclava Station, Las Chicas is a cosy village café, which prides itself on serving wholesome, quality food and coffee. They use only local, fresh and sustainable produce for their extensive menu, which as well as serving breakfast all day, provides a range of lunch options and caters for takeaways and functions. Aside from its cool, urban interior, Las Chicas is home to a quaint little courtyard, perfect for al fresco dining in the sunshine. The City Lane was invited to see what it was all about, and we were keen to check it out.
In addition to its enticing food options, Las Chicas has you covered on the drinks front, serving everything from healthy juices and smoothies to coffees, teas and alcoholic beverages. One of the first things we noticed about the menu was the fact that it caters to everyone, offering vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and dairy free food. With so many tempting options to choose from, we decided to go for a breakfast and a lunch dish. And of course we couldn’t resist ordering a big bowl of fries, served with herb salt, aioli and tomato sauce.
For breakfast we went for the ‘build your own breakfast’ option made just the way you like it. Our plate combined the classic scrambled eggs on sourdough toast with all of the sides – Yarra Valley whipped feta, crushed avocado and bacon. The portion sizes at Las Chicas are extremely generous, leaving you completely satisfied. Cooked to perfection and beautifully presented, creating the perfect breakfast is clearly a major focus for this café.
We couldn’t resist the Grilled Marinated Chicken Salad; a dish served with grilled chicken, avocado, mango, heirloom tomato and coriander with a mango, passionfruit, lime and chilli dressing with grilled flatbread. This vibrant, colourful dish was fulfilling and delicious, made with quality ingredients and bursting with flavour. We loved the fusion of the fresh, citrus salad and warm marinated chicken and flat bread.
With its tasty food, relaxed atmosphere and beautiful, inviting interior, Las Chicas is the perfect café for a weekend brunch with friends. Whether you fancy something healthy or naughty and indulgent, there is no doubt that you will find your ideal breakfast or lunch combination on this fresh, innovative menu.
