MELBOURNE | Soaking up the breezy seaside air, Lenny 3206 is the newest and coolest café to call Albert Park home, on a corner location just a stone’s throw away from the foreshore. Only 6 months old, Lenny is the sister café to Armadale’s Moby, and it is already making waves amongst Melbourne’s café scene thanks to its familiar yet distinctively different venue style and food, and we were recently invited to check it out.
Purposefully styled to embody a laid back, zen-like ambience within their brightly lit space, Lenny is a stark contrast from the rush and bustle of Moby’s inner suburb vibe. Surrounded by windows through which natural light streams through, and white walls off which this natural light is reflected, design firm Golden have created a calming, beach-like ambience. With attention to detail applied to things like the pink marble counter-top, blonde-wood furniture and beach-like rock fixtures on the front door and lights, Lenny is polished and stylish, with an enjoyable carefree air to it.
Co-owners Christina Higgins and Steve Svensen are just as passionate about their dogs as they are about their cafés, as evidenced by the decision to name both Moby and Lenny after their dogs. Being dog friendly contributes to Lenny being a popular destination amongst locals who like to take a leisurely stroll along the seaside with their canine friends.
The menu follows the trend of showcasing an all day breakfast and lunch, with the variety of options sufficient to create intrigue and excitement without overwhelming the customer. Melbourne classics such as Smashed Avocado, Chili Scrambled Eggs and Corn Fritters make an appearance, though each have their own unique qualities at Lenny.
The Corn Fritter arrives as a single, pancake-thin fritter filled with vegetables, paired with house cured salmon, herb salad, crispy capers, a poached egg and horseradish crème fraiche. A fritter devoid of oiliness and complete with crunchy edges proves memorable, as does the addition of horseradish crème fraiche to heighten the dish.
The Lenny Fish Burger is carefully plated with soft brioche buns revealing a patty of spicy crumbed fish, Asian slaw, Kewpie mayo, pickled cucumber and fried shallots. A generous helping of sweet potato fries on the side completes the picture, with its seasoning making them so addictive, you’ll be unable to stop at just one.
For those inclined towards the sweet, the Cookies N’ Cream Ricotta Hotcake is unspeakably impressive. Crisp edges, a light and fluffy center, and nodules of white chocolate and ricotta surprisingly found throughout the batter makes this one of the best we have tried in Melbourne. Topped off with a white chocolate glaze, peach gel, chocolate cookie crumble, vanilla ice cream and fresh strawberries, we won’t judge you if you won’t want to share this with anyone.
Fitting in with the family-friendly vibe of the surrounding beach side neighborhood, a kid’s menu is available, as are wine, beers and cocktails for those who enjoy a light tipple at lunch. Lenny’s passion, innovation and style are why we love discovering new and exciting venues in our extremely livable city. When the food and produce are of a high standard (and very affordable) to complement the experience as a whole, we have no qualms recommending places like this to everyone we know.
