PERTH | Little Creatures Brewery is steeped in Australia craft beer history and has been producing beer since 2000. Today the company might operate breweries elsewhere in Australia and overseas, and it might be a wholly owned subsidiary of Lion, which in turn is 100% owned by Japanese beverage giant Kirin, but the Fremantle brewery where it all started.

When ex Matilda Bay Brewery employees Howard Cearns, Nic Trimboli and Phil Sexton founded Little Creatures the brewery launched with a Pale Ale, inspired by the American Style IPAs of the time. While it may not seem like a challenging beer today, it was very different than what was on the market in Western Australia back in 2000.

The brewery and brewpub itself are located in an old crocodile farm, which was originally constructed to house the Taskforce ’87 yachts (Kookaburra) participating in the 1987 America’s Cup. The space is perfect for a brewery with high ceilings, and windows and a deck looking out to the ocean. The brewpub is contained in the centre of the building and features lots of exposed concrete and beams, wood and steel. There’s ample seating across two floors and a lively atmosphere.

All of the core range beers are available on tap (Original Pilsner, Bright Ale, Rogers Beer, Dog Days Session Ale, Elsie WA Ale, and India Pale Ale), along with a seasonal single batch release. You can also get beers from Little Creatures’ sister brewery, White Rabbit. Food wise it’s good quality versions of pub favourites like wood fire pizzas, nachos, steak, salads, and other share plates, along with the always popular and fantastic frites. Breakfast is also offered on the weekend.

Tours of the brewery are offered daily, and there are regular events such as beer classes. Check the official website for details.
