MELBOURNE | Littlefoot Bar is a small bar in Footscray that was one of the first of the relatively recent wave of new bars to open in this rapidly changing part of town. Aware of the tension between the Footscray of new and old, and the pros and cons of gentrification, the owners, Stuart and Liana Lucca-Pope, have tried to create a place that has a sense of community.
This philosophy can be seen through the bar’s menu. The drinks list is primarily Australian, and features local names like Two Birds Brewing, Stockade Brew Co on the beer taps, and Starward Whisky and Four Pillars gin on the spirits shelf. Cocktails and food draw inspiration from the area’s Vietnamese, African and Indian communities, and ingredients are sourced from local makers, markets, delis and micro farmers wherever possible. Cocktails contain ingredients lemongrass and Vietnamese coffee, while the fusion food menu features a mixture of vegetarian and meat options like African/Vietnamese bánh mi, and Nutella Ethiopian injera “pinwheels” with a coconut dipping sauce. The kitchen doesn’t operate on Mondays, but you’re more than welcome to bring in or order food from on of the many nearby restaurants.
As for the bar itself, the front space, which houses the bar, is where all of the action is, with a stage for live music and DJs (complete with a large red curtain that evokes the Black Lodge from Twin Peaks), while the back section is quieter, with large booths and a few larger tables and stools. DJs generally perform on Friday and Saturday, and live musicians on Sundays. Live music tends to be small piece, original acts playing “stripped back” sets while the DJ sets are more upbeat and indie.
