MELBOURNE | Lulo brings a melting pot of South American influences and a super chill bar scene to the heart of Hawthorn. Having opened its doors more than eleven years ago, owners Matt Waldron and his wife Michelle have created a restaurant with substance to match its style. Matt, also the head chef, draws continued inspiration for Lulo’s menu from his and Michelle’s extensive South American travels and Michelle’s Colombian heritage.

We were recently invited to have dinner at Lulo, which has recently undergone renovations to reveal a stylish interior with a relaxed ambiance. The interior is stylish and modern, with the gorgeous imagery of the salsa dancing Lulo capturing yourr eye and imagination as you enter the restaurant. The bar has a super chill vibe where you can sip on exotic cocktails and watch Matt prepare the fresh seafood offerings.

The impressive and extensive drinks menu really sets the mood with a large variety of wines from South America as well as Spain, France and closer to home. If it’s not wine you’re after you can opt for a Spanish beer on tap or a wickedly good cocktail.

The food menu is exciting, exotic and designed to be shared. There is a great variety of small plates or larger plates, including a few options for those who are not wanting to share. There’s a lot to like on the menu, but for us the highlight is the ceivche. The Yellow Fin Tuna Tiraditos Nikkei with chilli, garlic, wakame and pressed cucumber melts in your mouth and draws inspiration from the Nikkei (Japanese x Peruvian fusion) cuisine of Peru. Matt sources his fish daily from his fishmonger and only serves the best and freshest. You will usually find a coral fish on the menu and it might change depending on the catch of the day.

Other highlights for us include the Wild Caught Octopus off the grill, as well as the Pan Seared Iron Chicken, which compliment the Golden Cassava chips and Grilled Cos Lettuce perfectly. The dessert menu offers South American Churros, a selection of Latin inspired ice-creams and boutique cheeses. All the food we sampled was hearty, delicious and comforting.

Lulo is a great place to share a meal with friends and family. It is also a perfect spot for date nights, relaxing at the bar whilst getting to know the locals. The ambiance, food, people and vibe will have us back again.
