MELBOURNE | With Laksa King and Chef Lagenda so well known in Flemington, a third option,M Yong Tofu, can easily be overlooked. It shouldn’t be. The small, cash only, family run restaurant offers a wide variety of authentic Malaysian dishes and is always packed with locals in the know.

It’s small, no frills place with lots of cramped seating and a kitchen and counter at the back. You place your order at the counter and take a seat. It doesn’t take long for the friendly staff to bring you your food. We opted for the curry laksa, which several people we know have said is their favourite in the area, along with beef rendang on dry noodles, and roti canai.

The laksa is very good. Chicken, beans, broccoli eggplant, tofu, fish cake and noodles with an excellent laksa base that’s not as sweet as many others, but more fragrant and complex. Not necessarily better or worse than the version of Laksa King, just different and equally delicious. The beef rendang is another hit – big chunks of wonderfully tender and intensely flavoured slow cooked beef with a generous serve of noodles and sprouts. The roti canai is a great choice to help mop up some of the sauces. M Yong Tofu’s hot Teh Tarik also hit the spot, with that usual level of sweetness and a nice rich tea flavour.

One thing we didn’t order here, and are keen to try on our next visit, is the restaurant’s namesake, Yong Tau Foo. It’s a Hakka Chinese dish consisting primarily of tofu filled with ground meat mixture or fish paste, and your choice of extras. Here’s it’s things like eggplant, wonton, fish stuffed tofu, prawn dumplings, fish balls in your choice of soup with your choice of noodles. Definitely something to try on our next visit.
