MELBOURNE | Manakish is a delightful addition to the Sydney Road food scene in Brunswick with its minimalist approach to design very much in line with the aesthetics you see in the area’s eating and drinking spots today. What Manakish does well is to modernise traditional Lebanese food whilst making it approachable to all. The menu is quite extensive, and includes classic dishes such as falafel plates, lamb/kofta skewers and dip mezza plates along with numerous western dishes with a Middle Eastern twist.

If you are not concerned about smashed avocado being the reason that Gen Y and Millennials will never enter the property market you may like Manakish’s smashed avocado with mint zaatar, feta, grilled mushrooms served on flat bread. It is a flavoursome dish which is a great introduction to Middle Eastern flavours if you are not familiar with them. If you are after something a little more traditional, the falafel plate is outstanding. The falefel is moist and light with a crispy outer shell which is beautifully accompanied by a fresh tabbouli salad, hummus, pickles and freshly made flat bread.

Manakish is not only a cafe it is also a bakery as such all the bread and pies/pizzas sold are made daily in their rather impressive oven towards the back . If you don’t feel like dining in you can always grab one of their pies takeaway. One word of warning – the portion sizes are very generous, so make sure you are hungry when you visit Manakish as you will not want to waste any of the delicious food.
