THESSALONIKI | When you eat at one of the five restaurants owned by brothers brothers Christos and Stavros Sotiroudis, Soterra Group, chances are you’re in for a good feed. Across the road from Diagonios, which joined the group in 2022, you’ll find the brothers’ second restaurant Marea Sea Spirit.
Walking past a few times, the food and menu had caught my attention. When Tomer, the owner of Thessaloniki’s excellent craft beer bar, Love Craft, mentioned to me that it was one of his favourite spots in town for a feed, I was sold, and decided to pop in for a quick lunch before catching a flight to Athens.
Opened in 2016, Marea is all about classic Greek seafood dishes, made using the best quality produce sourced from local suppliers, reimagined through a modern lens.
To start, handmade marinated gavros (anchovies), with rock samphire, herb tarama, and tomato crumble. Next, marinated sea bream carpaccio with calamansi vinegar, dried olive, salt-cured capers, charred lime fillets, and fresh chives. To finish, a richer dish – creamy orzo with plump shrimp. All wonderful, even the bread – white and grain, with olives, olive oil, and balsamic.
Grab a seat in the covered area outside, if you can. It’s a nice spot to watch the world go by as you enjoy your meal. Also shout out to our waiter, whose name I cannot recall. A friendly, chatty Albanian chap who grew up near the border with Greece, close to my grandparent’s villages.
