AUCKLAND | MASU is a Japanese restaurant by celebrity chef Nic Watt, and sees Sky City seriously up the game when it comes to its dining options. Masu is all about contemporary Japanese food, with an emphasis on dishes cooked on the robata grill – that is, an open grill filled with white hot charcoal.
It’s a busy restaurant, with low lighting, and a large, open plan, modern fit out. The best place to sit is at one of the seats set up around the grill, so you can watch the food being cooked, but there’s lots of traditional seating too. Along with the robata, there’s also a raw bar where sushi and sashimi is prepared, and a regular kitchen.
There’s a lot to recommend on the menu, which offers a good mix of traditional and modern dishes, with a bit of Korean influences too. The soft-shell crab maki rolls and pork and kimchi gyoza are a fantastic way to start, as is the fresh, flavorsome sashimi. For mains, we love the miso marinated cod with yuzu, while for dessert you can’t go past the chocolate and hazelnut pudding topped with matcha powder.
For drinks, the wine list is extensive, and consists of mostly New Zealand wines. We like that a large number of wines are also available by the glass. Beer lovers are also taken care of, with crafty Japanese options from the likes of Baird and Yamaguchi Narutaki Kogen on offer. Sake is of course available too, as are a number of Japanese inspired cocktails. Try the Plumberry South, which includes damson plum vodka, cinnamon and orange-spiced umeshu, raspberry and citrus.
Service is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, and staff can passionately explain anything on the menu for you.
