PERTH | In yet another instalment of “wait a sec, didn’t this place used to be…” it’s a lunch in enjoyed with friends last month at Mayfair Lane.
I had a feeling that the space was somewhere if been before but it took a while for me to be like “aha I knew it”. That’s where the dance floor was, that’s where the speaker fell on my brother’s head, that’s where the smokers used to congregate, that’s where the indoor river/lake ish thing used to be! Yes, this space was home to the pretentious wankfest that was Onyx Bar back in the mid 2000s (I was in the UK during the Brown Fox era).
Today, things are VERY different. Mayfair Lane is a light filled pub that owners Chris and Foni Pollitt have modelled off the British gastropub. That is, great drinks, honest food that eschews trends, and top service. The space certainly evoked memories of some of the places I enjoyed frequenting when I loved in London.
Behind the bar you’ll find an assortment of cocktails, along with beers crafty and otherwise from across the country. The multi award winning wine list that Foni has created is particularly impressive. It features wines from across the world, with a particularly interesting selection of “volcanic” wines. Western Australia, as you’d expect, is very nicely represented.
For food, head chef Shannon Wilson and his team are putting out absolute quality, using some of the best local produce around. The Mayfair steak sandwich features a tender piece of medium cooked Margaret River wagyu rump, horseradish, cheese sauce, onion jam, and rocket. I added an egg to mine, and did a mini menu hack by swapping out the chips for a serve of the duck fat potatoes. Outstanding.
My friends all enjoyed their food too. There’s the Angus beef burger, bangers and mash, daily pasta special. When I saw chocolate mousse on the menu – something I haven’t had for ages, I had to grab one. Needless to say, it too hit the spot.
If you’re looking for a casual, friendly venue with quality food and drinks list that’s diverse and accessible, Mayfair Lane fits the bill.
