AUCKLAND | Miss Moonshine’s is a Ponsonby restaurant that’s all about low and slow American BBQ. Hidden at the back of a building off the main street, the space is surprisingly large, with the open indoor area and spacious outdoor area providing lots of seating options.
The food here might be inspired by American BBQ, namely Texas-style BBQ, but several of the dishes have a decidedly Kiwi influence to them. Meat is all free range and locally sourced, kiwi woods like manuka are used for smoking, and all produce is of the highest quality.
For starters, make sure you try the street-style corn topped with chipotle butter cream, bacon, fresh chilli, lime and coriander, and the mac & cheese balls with bacon crumb, truffle mayo. For mains, it’s hard to go past the grain fed beef brisket served with truffle butter and grits, and the pulled pork with Moonshine sauce, crackling, Brooklyn pickle, and fried bread. If you want to try a few things and have a group of at least found people you can go for one of the set menus, which gives you an assortment of dishes for either $45 or $70 per person depending on how hungry you are and which option you go for.
For drinks, there’s a good selection of mostly local wines, along with a few commercial and craft beers. Spirits and cocktails lean towards to darker end of the spectrum – moonshine, rum, and bourbon. Try the cherry vanilla moonshine shake for a boozy sweet end to your meal.
