LOS ANGELES | Mohawk Bend Echo Park is the brainchild of owner Tony Yanow (Golden Road Brewing, Tony’s Darts Away) and offers an interesting twist on the typical gastropub/sports bar that’s decidedly modern and very fitting for this part of LA. The space, which is housed in the old Ramona movie theatre and divided into five distinct areas (dining room, pub, 2 bars, patio), offers 70 mostly local craft beers on tap along with a menu that’s very vegan-friendly, but still offers a lot for meat eaters.

The food features elevated pub dishes like pizzas, salads and pastas. Vegans can enjoy options like the ‘Angry Vegan’ pizza featuring house tomato sauce, fresh serrano chilies, Calabrian chilies, kite hill vegan ricotta cheese, follow your heart vegan mozzarella, house-made vegan parmesan, chili oil, oregano, while meat eaters will want to take a look at the ‘Turkey Cubano’ with pulled turkey, canadian bacon, gruyere cheese, mozzarella cheese, spicy mustard, and pickles. For dessert, we highly recommend the ‘Cast Iron Cookie’, a indulgently large chocolate chip cookie baked in cast iron in the wood-fired oven.

Vegans need not be concerned about contamination from animal products either – the vegan and non-vegan parts of the large, open kitchen are kept separate.

Drinks wise beer is a big selling point, with many interesting and tasty brews on offer, along with tasting flights for those who want to try a few things. It’s not just about great beer though – there’s a focused selection of Californian wines on tap, and the cocktail list uses the bar’s selection of over 100 Californian spirits as a starting point.

Mohawk Bend is open for lunch and dinner, and breakfast on weekends, and gets busy during peak times, so make sure to book ahead if you’re dining with a group. Having said that, we could think of worse places to wait at the bar for a table.
